Imagine the Future

Politics and Social Justice are every bit as important to young people as they are to adults. In this art show, students drew on their inner activists to create colorful depictions of today’s problems, and their vision for a better tomorrow.

For our Spring 2017 all-school art show, students brought the present and the future together into an array of art projects imagining how today’s social issues might be solved through social, political, and technological innovation.

Middle schoolers studied social injustices in present-day America — including racial discrimination, the school-to-prison pipeline, and questions around the ethical use of technology and social media — and then expressed their hopes, fears, and intentions for change in a variety of multidimensional, thought-provoking, and powerful projects. One student searched a nearby scrapyard for a discarded keyboard which he turned into a garden. Another crafted a jail cell out of the iconic #2 pencil.

Primary students enjoyed thinking about the future from an imaginative perspective, exploring topics like space exploration, inventors of the future, and futuristic food made out of clay. Our TK students designed a large walk-in rocket ship with a playful control panel, while the first graders designed multi-dimensional hats with the magic of granting wishes!

The show demonstrated the breadth and depth of our talented students, and showcased what can happen when invention, activism, and imagination all come together in a visual medium.
